When using a computer the user will be using several applications, this may seem instantaneous to the user but in the computer several processes must be completed for the applications to work.
For this there are several physical components set to each task: the bus interface unit, the arithmetic logic unit (these components are parts of the central processing unit), outside the cpu there is the address bus, the data bus, the control bus (these shall be looked at in more detail in the buses unit) the ROM, the RAM and the Input/Output control.
The way in which each of these components work is specific to the task at hand, the bus interface unit is integral to every task as this governs the transferrance of data to and from the memory. The arithmetic logic unit deals with any number crunching that needs to be done. The RAM and ROM are memory while the Input/Output control is used to interface with any external peripherals.
